Significance Of Diastolic Blood Pressure!
Blood pressure is the cause of a number of issues on the human body. Though this normally occurs in people who are aged and are over 60 years of age, it is not uncommon in people between 40 and 60 years. It occurs in this age group because of hyper tension and pressures of work and home. When people talk of blood pressure they also talk of diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure. What is diastolic blood pressure?
Whenever the blood pressure is measured, it is expressed as two numbers viz., 110/70. The lower number is called the diastolic blood pressure while the upper one is the systolic blood pressure. Normally, blood pressure is taken as follows: the doctor or the nurse would wrap the sphygmomanometers pressure tubing to your upper arm and then fill it up with air so that the pulse stops. Normally this is done by pumping in up to 30mm of mercury over the normal systolic pressure. The stethoscope is placed on the cuff to know the pulse as well as the sound of blood gushing through the arteries.
When the measuring starts the pulse would have stopped and the pressure in the air tube is let out slowly. When the pulse starts back the height of the mercury is noted. This is the systolic pressure. At the same time the sound on the artery also starts. This is the sound of the blood gushing through the artery. Since the blood flow as stopped, the heart would have started pumping more and therefore should be the highest blood pressure. Once the blood is allowed to flow properly with reduced pressure and when it reaches normalcy the gushing of the blood would stop. This would mean there will not be any sound of the blood flowing through the artery. At this point the height of the mercury is again noted. This is the diastolic blood pressure. This indicates the pressure when the heart is at 'rest' or working normally. Therefore, diastolic blood pressure informs you of the normal blood pressure whereas the systolic one lets you know the upper end.
Normally, the diastolic blood pressure should lay less than 80 under normal conditions. When the diastolic blood pressure lies between 80 and 89, it is normally looked at as a pre high pressure condition. It is time to take stock and correct any untoward happenings in the normal course of work. When it is over 90 but less than 100, then you are high blood pressure prone. If the diastolic blood pressure goes over hundred, you are under hyper tension normally called high blood pressure stage 2. This means you take remedial actions in a hurry. High blood pressures are cause by life style mostly. The diastolic blood pressure does show an increase with the change in diet, exercise regime and a host of other daily habits.
